Immediate Emergency Actions

Follow these step-by-step actions based on your specific dental emergency. Time is critical – act quickly while seeking professional help.

Severe Tooth Pain

1. Rinse mouth with warm salt water (1 tsp salt in 8oz warm water)

2. Take over-the-counter pain relief (ibuprofen preferred for inflammation)

3. Apply cold compress to outside of cheek for 15-20 minutes

4. Avoid extreme temperatures in food and drinks

5. Call emergency dentist immediately

Knocked Out Tooth

1. Find the tooth and handle by the crown only (not the root)

2. Rinse gently with water if dirty – DO NOT scrub

3. Try to reinsert tooth into socket if possible

4. If reinsertion isn’t possible, store in milk or saliva

5. Seek emergency care within 30 minutes for best results

Chipped or Broken Tooth

1. Save any broken tooth pieces in milk or saliva

2. Rinse mouth with warm water

3. Apply gauze to any bleeding areas for 10 minutes

4. Use cold compress on face to reduce swelling

5. Cover sharp edges with dental wax if available

Abscess or Swelling

1. Rinse with warm salt water several times daily

2. Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed

3. Apply cold compress to reduce swelling

4. Do NOT apply heat or pop the abscess

5. Seek immediate professional care – this can be life-threatening
